The Youth Survey Luxembourg is the only general survey of young people living in Luxembourg. Through this project, we are able to understand different aspects of young people’s lives, their attitudes and needs.

This means that, at the end of the project, our research findings will help specialists, other researchers, the government and society to develop better policies and improve young people’s lives in Luxembourg. Therefore, the participation and answers of each respondent are extremely valuable to us.

In order to ensure our data are accurate and representative of the the population we are interested in, we have worked in cooperation with the Centre des technologies de l’Information de l’État to select our respondents from the National Register of Persons (RNPP). Please note that during this procedure, researchers at the University of Luxembourg did not have access to respondents’ names or addresses at any time.

We have carried out a statistical procedure to select young people living in Luxembourg who are between 12 and 29 years old. This means that every selected respondent is extremely important for our survey results.

During the survey, the questions that are asked in the youth survey are automatically adapted to the age and life situation that the adolescent indicates.

The survey includes questions about the individual and their social background and living conditions (e.g. age, sex, household composition, housing situation, migration background), employment and education (e.g. current educational status and/or employment situation), health and well-being (e.g. self-rated health, mental well-being, health complaints), digital and leisure activities (e.g. sports and cultural activities, online activities, social media and gaming), the social environment (e.g. family and peer relationship, social support), political participation and social engagement (e.g. political interest, forms of civic and political participation), as well as values and attitudes (e.g. trust in institutions, future expectations, social cohesion).

Please note that adolescents can participate in the Youth Survey Luxembourg only by invitation, i.e. in case they received an invitation letter to participate in our study.

If you have received an information letter, the envelope also contained an invitation and a sheet with an ID and password. Please give the invitation and the sheet with the ID and password to the adolescent, on whom you hold parental authority ONLY if you agree with the following:

By giving the invitation and sheet with the ID and password to the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are, you agree that:

You consent to the collection and use of personal data (only indirect identifiers as described in the information notice about personal data processing here) of the adolescent, on whom you hold parental authority, in relation to the Youth Survey Luxembourg 2027.

You agree to the data provided by the adolescent, on whom you hold parental authority, being archived at the University of Luxembourg and being used in pseudonymised form for other research in the area of youth in Luxembourg beyond the Youth Survey Luxembourg 2027.

You consent to data belonging to the adolescent, on whom you hold parental authority, being processed as described in the information notice here for the purposes of policy briefs, the 2030 Youth Report, PhD theses and other scientific publications.

By giving the invitation and the sheet with the ID and password to the adolescent, on whom you hold parental authority, you acknowledge that you give consent for the use of the personal data of the adolescent, as specified above, and that the researchers have sufficiently informed you about the nature and potential consequences and risks of the Youth Survey Luxembourg 2027, and that you are aware that you can ask further questions. Participation is voluntary. Upon completion of the survey, participants have the chance to receive a voucher worth 15 Euros as a thank you for their participation. In total, up to 2000 vouchers will be distributed to the participants on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Please note that, in this survey, the respondents will be asked about some topics such as feelings of sadness or other personal concerns. Some respondents may consider such content unpleasant. These questions can be skipped and the survey can be paused at any time and continued at a later time using the personal access code. Participants may also end their participation at any time without giving a reason and without any consequence.

The Youth Survey Luxembourg is subject to the general data protection regulations currently in force in Luxembourg. This means that all answers will be strictly confidential, pseudonymised and used only for scientific purposes. Pseudonymisation means that the personal data is encrypted with a code that makes it impossible for the researchers involved at the University of Luxembourg, as well as outsiders, to identify the respondents or link them to any contact details. Hence, it will not be possible to identify participants personally at any time, neither before, during nor after the survey.

For this reason, after completing the survey, someone’s answers cannot be excluded from our database. The answers will be securely stored at the University of Luxembourg for a period of 10 years. Only researchers directly involved in the project will have access to the pseudonymised data. Once the project is completed, the pseudonymised data will be made available to other researchers for scientific purposes.

The Centre des technologies de l’Information de l’État has attributed a number to each respondent who was chosen. If a respondent agrees to be invited again in 2029 to the survey, that number is used to invite this person again. At no point in time do the researchers at the University of Luxembourg know who is linked to that number.

Please ignore the invitation letter and any reminders. Non-participation does not have any consequences and no reason needs to be given.
