Project Description

Research Project Objectives

The Youth Survey Luxembourg is a mutual project by the University of Luxembourg (UL) and the Ministère de l’Éducation Nationale, de l’Enfance et de la Jeunesse (MENJE). The aim of the Youth Survey Luxembourg is to provide findings on different life aspects of adolescents and young adults in Luxembourg. The objective is to gather reliable repeated cross-sectional data, which is necessary for researching and monitoring the development of the situation of young people in Luxembourg – especially after the pandemic and to enable evidence-based policy-responses. After survey waves in 2019, 2020 and 2021, a representative web survey and a pretest are thus realised again in 2023 and 2024. The analysis of these data will provide much needed evidence for the quinquennial youth report and ongoing research projects at the Centre for Childhood and Youth research (CCY).

Questionnaire

The Youth Survey Luxembourg consists of 8 thematic modules designed to allow the monitoring of trends over time. That is, a mostly identical survey will be fielded in 5 years again etc.. The survey includes questions about the individual (e.g. age, sex), the life situation (e.g. school or work situation), the socio-economic status (e.g. level of education, household fixtures, profession and country of birth of parents), health (e.g. physical or psychological impairments), health behaviour (e.g. physical activity, consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, cannabis, preventive behaviour), social environment (e.g. friends, family, housing situation, household), politics (e.g. political interest and trust), digitalisation (access to and use of digital devices, parental supervision, online learning, risks related to gaming, social media and negative online encounters) as well as opinions and attitudes of the participant (e.g. about school, job or artificial intelligence).

Respondent sampling and selection

A maximum of 22’000 participants will be randomly selected through proportionate stratified sampling. Stratification variables considered for the sampling are (1) age (12-29), (2) sex and (3) canton of residence in Luxembourg. The UL will calculate the sample sizes for each stratum and the respondent selection procedure will be conducted by the Centre des technologies de l’Information de l’État (CTIE). Access to the RNPP has been granted to the CTIE by the ministry of digitalisation after consultation of the Commission du RNPP (n/réf.: n110: Youth survey Luxembourg).

Use of incentives

Online incentive vouchers worth 15 euros each will be delivered to the first 2’000 respondents upon completion of the survey.

Data protection

The University of Luxembourg implements measures to process your personal data securely and in a confidential manner and the researchers responsible for the collection of data (the survey) and processing of data are bound to maintain confidentiality.

The data collected during the survey will be used for the aforementioned research project and associated research, such as PhD theses and policy reports.

Personal responses given during the survey will only be collected and processed with your prior consent. Your data will be collected and saved with the use of pseudonyms, which means that the personal data is encrypted with a code that makes it impossible for the researchers involved at the University of Luxembourg, as well as outsiders, to identify the respondents. Hence, it will not be possible to identify you personally at any time, neither before, during nor after the survey.
