Detailed information notice about personal data processing

As part of the research project “Youth Survey Luxembourg 2024” (YSL 2024), personal data will be collected, processed and analysed to achieve the scientific objectives of the research project.

What data do we collect and process?

The following personal data will be collected for the purposes detailed in the information notice:

We do not collect direct personal identifiers (such as your name or your IP-address) but some of the data we collect is defined as indirect personal identifiers:

  • gender, month and year of birth, commune of residence
  • languages spoken, level of education, income bracket
  • nationality
  • data revealing philosophical beliefs
  • well-being and health-related information

We collect personal data directly from you.

All necessary procedures and precautions will be taken to maintain the confidentiality of the research participants.

Why do we collect and use your personal data?

We collect and use your personal data to address the research questions that the research project aims to tackle; this may involve writing dissertations or reports, storing and analysing the data and publishing our research results in reports, PhD theses, academic articles or other scientific publications.

Your pseudonymised data may also be important after this research project for other research on adolescents in Luxembourg.

What is our legal basis for processing the data?

Your personal data relating to the research project will be processed in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Luxembourg Act of 1 August 2018 on Data Protection. The legal basis for the processing of your personal data in the context of this research project is laid down in Article 6 (1) GDPR a) the data subject has given consent to the processing of his or her personal data for one or more specific purposes; and e) processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out by the University in the public interest.

This research project involves sensitive data regarding well-being and health. The processing of personal data is therefore also based on Article 9 (2) (j) processing is necessary for archiving purposes in the public interest, scientific or historical research purposes or statistical purposes.

The research mission of the University is laid down in the Act of 27 June 2018 concerning the organisation of the University of Luxembourg.

Who is responsible for the processing of my personal data?

The Data Controller in respect of processing of your data is the University of Luxembourg, a public institution for higher education and research, whose registered office is at 2 avenue de l’Université, L-4365 Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, acting for the Department of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.

How do we protect your data?

In order to protect the confidentiality of your data, the sampling of participants and invitation of participants are not handled by the research project, but by the Centre des technologies de l’information de l’Etat (CTIE). You will only be identified by a code number (or pseudonym) during the data collection, in the data and during the analysis of the data. Any reports or publications that will be produced by the research team during this research project will only include data that is aggregated for subgroups of participants, no individual answers or results will be published.

How long is your personal data stored?

Your personal data will be stored at the University of Luxembourg for a duration of 10 years after the publication of the results of the research project.

Who can access and see your personal data?

The recipients of your personal data are researchers at the University of Luxembourg involved in this research project. Other external researchers, research organisations or administrations might be allowed to access the extracts from the pseudonymised data under the conditions that their research question is in line with the research project and they adhere to the same data security standards.

Do we transfer data outside the European Union?

Your personal data will only be processed within the European Union.

What are your rights under the General Data Protection Regulation?

You will have the right to access and rectify your personal data. In certain cases (in accordance with the conditions set out by the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679)), you will also have the right to object to the way the data is used, to request that your data be deleted, to ask to restrict certain aspects of the processing of your data and to retrieve your data to forward it to a third party (right of data portability). You also have the right to withdraw your consent to the use your data at any time. This applies both to the use of your data in this research project and to their use in other research. But please not that if you withdraw your consent once the investigators have already collected data for research, they are still allowed to use this information.

If you wish to exercise your rights, you should contact the principal investigator or his/her designated representative. He/she will liaise with the University of Luxembourg’s Data Protection Officer to handle your request. Having read the above information carefully, ONLY give the invitation and the sheet with the ID and password to the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are, if you agree with the statements below:

You consent to the collection and use of the personal data (only indirect identifiers as described in the information notice about your personal data processing here) of the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are, in relation to the Youth Survey Luxembourg 2024.

You agree that the data provided by the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are being archived at the University of Luxembourg and being used in pseudonymised form for other research in the area of youth in Luxembourg beyond the Youth Survey 2024.

You consent to data belonging to the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are, being processed as described in the information notice here for the purposes of policy briefs, PhD theses and other scientific publications.

By giving the invitation and the sheet with the ID and password to the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are, you acknowledge that you give consent for the use of the personal data of the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are, as specified above, and that the researchers have sufficiently informed you about the nature and potential consequences and risks of the Youth Survey 2024, and that you are aware that you can ask further questions. Further you acknowledge that you have read the information above.
