What is the Youth Survey Luxembourg?

The Youth Survey Luxembourg is a mutual research project between the University of Luxembourg and the Ministère de l’Éducation Nationale, de l’Enfance et de la Jeunesse.

It aims to understand different aspects of young people’s lives in the country, such as education, work, health, family and political engagement, among other topics. Which educational path do they follow? How often do they exercise in their leisure time? How satisfied are they with their life? These are some of the questions we are investigating.

Why is the Youth Survey Luxembourg important?

The Youth Survey Luxembourg is the only general survey of young people living in Luxembourg. Through this project, we are able to understand different aspects of young people´s lives, their attitudes and needs.

This means that, at the end of the project, our research findings will help specialists, other researchers, the government and society to develop better policies and improve young people´s lives in Luxembourg. Therefore, the participation and answers of each respondent are extremely valuable for us.

Why was the young person whose legal guardian I am selected?

In order to ensure our data are accurate and representative of the the population we are interested in, we have worked in cooperation with the Centre des technologies de l’Information de l’État to select our respondents from the National Register of Persons (RNPP). Please note that during this procedure, researchers at the University of Luxembourg did not have access to respondents’ names or addresses at any time.

We have carried out a statistical procedure to select young people living in Luxembourg who are between 12 and 29 years old. This means that every selected respondent is extremely important for our survey results.

Which questions will be asked in the questionnaire?

During the survey, the questions that are asked in the youth survey are automatically adapted to the age and life situation that the adolescent indicates.

The survey includes questions about the individual (e. g. age, sex), the life situation (e.g. school or work situation), the socio-economic status (e.g. level of education, household fixtures, profession and country of birth of parents), health (e.g. physical and psychological impairments), health behaviour (e.g. physical activity, consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, cannabis, preventive behaviour), social environment (e.g. friends, family, housing situation, household), politics (e.g. political interest and trust), digitalisation (e.g. access to and use of digital devices, parental supervision, online learning, risks related to gaming, social media and negative online encounters) as well as opinions and  attitudes of the participant (e.g. about school, job, or artificial intelligence).

I would like to have a look at the questionnaire. What should I do?

Please, do not use the ID and password that are in the envelope with the information letter. The ID and password are reserved for the participants of the study. Please contact us and we will provide access to the questionnaire (E-Mail: yosu@uni.lu, Telephone: (+352) 46 66 44 9695).

I agree that the adolescent, whose legal guardian I am, participates in the youth survey. What should I do?

Please note that adolescents can participate in the Youth Survey Luxembourg only by invitation, i.e. in case they received an invitation letter to participate in our study.

If you have received an information letter, the envelope also contained an invitation and a sheet with an ID and password. Please give the invitation and the sheet with the ID and password to the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are ONLY if you agree to the following:

By giving the invitation and sheet with the ID and password to the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are, you agree that:

You consent to the collection and use of personal data (only indirect identifiers as described in the information notice about personal data processing here) of the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are in relation to the Youth Survey 2024.

You agree to the data provided by the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are being archived at the University of Luxembourg and being used in pseudonymised form for other research in the area of youth in Luxembourg beyond the Youth Survey 2024.

You consent to data on the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are, being processed as described in the information notice here for the purposes of policy briefs, PhD theses and other scientific publications.

By giving the invitation and sheet with the ID and password to the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are, you acknowledge that you give consent for the use of personal data of the adolescent, whose legal guardian you are, as specified here, and that the researchers have sufficiently informed you about the nature and potential consequences and risks of the Youth Survey Luxembourg 2024, and that you are aware that you can ask further questions.

Further, by continuing, you acknowledge that you have read the information notice here.

Participation is voluntary. Upon completion of the survey, participants have the chance to receive a voucher worth 15 Euros as a thank you for their participation. In total, up to 2,000 vouchers will be distributed to the participants on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Please note that, in this survey, the respondents will be asked about some topics such as feelings of sadness, hopelessness and other personal concerns. Some respondents may consider such content unpleasant. These questions can be skipped and the survey can be paused at any time and continued at a later time using the personal access code. Participants may also end their participation at any time without giving a reason and without consequences.

What will happen to the personal data?

The Youth Survey Luxembourg is subject to the general data protection regulations currently in force in Luxembourg. This means that all answers will be strictly confidential, pseudonymised and used only for scientific purposes. Pseudonymisation means that the respondent’s personal data is encrypted with an ID that makes it impossible for the researchers involved at the University of Luxembourg as well as outsiders to identify the respondent or link them to any contact details. Hence, it will not be possible to identify the respondent personally at any time, neither before, during nor after the survey.

For this reason, after completing the survey, the answers cannot be excluded from our database. The answers will be securely stored at the University of Luxembourg for a period of 10 years. Only researchers directly involved in the project will have access to the pseudonymised data. Once the project is completed, the pseudonymised data will be made available to other researchers for scientific purposes.

You can download further information on our data protection policy here.

The adolescent, whose legal guardian I am, does not want to participate in the Youth Survey Luxembourg. What should I do?

Please ignore the invitation letter and any reminders. Non-participation does not have any consequences and no reason needs to be given.
